St. Francis of Assisi Day: Blessing of Animals set for Oct. 4

Pastor Jessica blesses a kitten held by Sara Johnson at the 2014 Blessing of the Animals service On Sunday, October 4 at 2 p.m., the Presbyterian Church of Vinton will hold a Blessing of the Animals Service.  This service is open to the public. Adults, children, and their pets are invited to join in a short service of scripture readings and prayers.  This will be followed by individual blessings for each animal present.  Pets will receive special certificates of their blessing.

Taste of Dysart Fall Festival set for Oct. 3

      Preparations are being made for this years “Taste of Dysart Annual Fall Festival” that will be held Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 4-8 p.m.  Eight Iowa wineries including Cedar Ridge, Engelbrecht Family Winery, Fox Ridge, Fireside, John Ernest Vineyard & Winery, Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery, Summerset and Tassel Ridge Wineries are scheduled to provide tasting of their wine.

Basic Birding for the Young at Heart Benton Co. Nature Center, 2 pm Sun. Sept.27

Basic Birding for the Young at Heart Benton County Nature Center, 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 27th Intro to Birding for the Young/Young at Heart: this basic foray into birding is designed for novices ages 6 and up (with parent/chaperone). We'll start in the Nature Center, learning some basic birding techniques using the birding scope, then take a short hike to the bird blind and see what we can spot.

Playing for a Cure: Bingo fund-raiser set for Oct. 25

A new fund-raising effort to help raise money for the fight against breast cancer has been set for Oct. 25. Playing for a Cure, a Bingo and bake sale event, will take place at Vinton-Shellsburg High School on Sunday, Oct. 25. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. ; Bingo games will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets for Bingo are $10 before Oct. 18, $15 at the door, or $5 for children 12 and under.

Benton County Historical Society Presents: Evergreen Cemetery Walk

Where is the oldest gravestone at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton located? Who was the first inhabitant of the cemetery? What do the symbols on old gravestones mean? The answers to these and many other questions will be answered Saturday, September 19 by Rich Farmer. Meet outside Tim’s house (cemetery caretaker) at 10:00 am. Expect to walk, wear comfortable shoes.

VSHS Academic Awards Assembly set for Sept. 24

You are invited to attend the Vinton-Shellsburg Academic Awards Assembly on Thursday, September 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium.  The purpose of this assembly is to recognize students for outstanding academic achievement for the 2014-2015 school year.   We will recognize 105 students who maintained at least a 3.

VS golf plans 4-person best shot fund-raising tournament

Thye Vinton Shellsburg Boys and Girls Golf Teams are plannig a Four-Person Best Shot Golf Tournament for: Saturday, September 26, at the Vinton Country Club, 314 9th Ave, Vinton. Tee Time​: 10:00 am Cost​: $30.00 per golfer (includes green fees, flight prizes, stake prizes, and lunch) Details​: 9­hole tournament; $1000 prize for a HOLE IN ONE on Hole #5.

Scratch Cupcakery Fundraiser happening at Friends of the Shelter

From Monday, September 14-Friday, October 2, members of Friends of the Shelter will be selling 6-packs of Scratch Cupcakery cupcakes; delivery is set for Friday, October 23. Money raised will help pay for vetting and operational expenses for the animals in our care. Each 6-pack of Scratch Cupcakery cupcakes sells for $15-18 and contains an assortment of flavors.

Meeting for DC/NYC trip set for Sunday

This Sunday, September 13 there will be a parent meeting for anyone still interested in going to Washington D.C. and New York City this April 8-11.   Currently we have 47 participants signed up and we have room for more!!  It looks like the trip will coincide with Cherry Blossom time!  So, if your child has not signed up and is still interested please join me this Sunday at 7 pm in the high school library.
